Lance Brandt’s Post

Some things just can't be described with words.

Thats why BMW came up with this advertisement for their cars. They wanted to show people, that many physical things can be described using words, however the pleasure that you get from driving one of their cars cannot be described. I like this ad because it creates a picture that focuses on the car. There is a complete scene, but the car is the only thing in color, and therefore is the center of attention. I also like the use of typography in this ad because it utilizes the words to make the picture of what it says. For instance, the street is made up completely of the word 'asphalt'. I love the scene and the picture that it creates is something you might actually see. The use of the typography against the photography creates a great contrast, and showcases exactly what they want, the car. Also the tagline is very clever, and it gets you to think about how great the experience of driving a BMW actually is. Its indescribable.

  1. This design is so creative and so attention drawing. When I first glanced at it I wasnt sure what I was looking at, so I clicked the photo to enlarge it. The mystery of the graphic drew me in even closer to see what was really going on in the picture. I am always intrigued by how people can take something as simple as letters and typography and make it into something as interesting as a landscape. I also like the way they kept the car looking normal. The car is what first drew my attention which then led my eye to everything else.

  2. Wow, I think this is a really great ad. The detail in the typographic scene is captivating and this immediately grabs my attention. I agree that the tagline is really catchy as well. Overall this is a refreshing break from the same old car ads we are so used to seeing.

  3. That is a really interesting ad. I did not even realize at first that the background was made completely out of words. I like how the background is lighter and looks illustrated (even though its words). I also like the city scene they used in the background. I think it was a great idea to use text as the background.

  4. I agree with Rachel, it is refreshing from all the typical ads we see. I love when typography is used to make a picture - especially when it's descriptive text - telling you with words what the picture is. I, too, like the combination of both type and photography. It's nicely presented, and as the others have said, absolutely grabs your attention. I appreciate this designer!

  6. I love this ad! It is pretty incredible to think about how much work had to go into this. The detail is amazing. I can't help but wonder what effect it would have if the car was bright red, or a color that just POPPED out from the black and white text. It might not have worked, but it would be interesting to see how it would affect it.

  7. I am a HUGE BMW fan and love the way the company represents itself. This is obviously no exception. I really appreciate the integration of multiple languages showing that the company is international. I also agree with Trey, the background does a great job of being a background. I think it would be very easy for all the words to take away from the car, but the designer did an excelling job of making the car a focal point.
