I thought I would post some logos that I think are well designed. These are scanned from a book called Really Good Logos explained. I have also included the explanations so that you can read about them. Read the description, and then study how each uses imagery, type, and color to communicate the company. (Click on the image to see it in a larger form.)
The “O2 Connect” logo included in your post is a good example of a logo that plays “mind games” with a viewer. It certainly took me a little bit to get, but once I did I was very impressed with the overall design – and also how unobservant I apparently was the first time I laid eyes on it. I definitely agree with the commenters that the orange “2” is the best part of this particular solution. The four individual dots that it consists of are connected and slightly modified in ways that almost call to mind the curviness of an older slab-serif typeface like Clarendon.
ReplyDeleteEven with just these couple of examples, I have started to realize a trend in logos. Most logos like being in circles or contain conventions of roundness. Yes, I know that statement is heracy especially with the likes of that example of FedEx. But it seems that with roundness you are able to connect words and ideas like the O2 Connect. Its not a bad tool as it is quite popular and pleasing on the eyes. Sharpness can be distracting if not done right. The sharpness of FedEx works with those great colors and the arrow. The greatest arrow in the world of course. The dog logo is in a circle as well and the use of negative space is great to create a dog as well. Like the dog was wrapped around.
ReplyDeleteI like the way those logos looks especially the first one. I like the use of a simple design but yet it is still visually very interesting. I like use use of a border in the logo. I think the use of simple colors was a must because if they tried to many colors then the logo would start to become to busy. It communicates the message clearly and is visually interesting.
ReplyDeleteFor some reason I always assume that simplicity disregards details. This is in no way true. Each of these is detailed, yet simple. Because I am more of a big picture person, I assume I can dismiss the small things. Again, this is in no way true. These beautiful marks have challeneged me to PAY ATTENTION. I do not enough often enough.
ReplyDeleteEach of these logos are so neat and simple yet detailed too. The one that stood out to me is the 02 Connect logo. I found this one to be intriguing enough to keep me looking at it until I saw that the dots were not only connected but also representing a 2 representing both words in the logo. This gives the logo both good design and really good concept.
ReplyDeleteEach logo is fairly well-designed, but I think the one that stands out the most is Indiana Urban Forest Council logo. It makes good use of the emblem concept, and stark silhouetted shapes. The colors also help to tie in everything, since they are of the same shade. I think it works really well as logo.
ReplyDeleteI've been really surprised by these logos about how you can have so much information, and yet it is still a simple design, because in my mind I always think that if I want to make a simple design it can only have like one word, and maybe a graphic.... maybe, because I'm scared of making my simple design cluttered, but these really show that you can have a lot of stuff in a logo and still have a good design.
ReplyDeleteI really like all of these logos and I saw a theme throughout. Each of these logos incorporate a symbol or shape that describes their logo. The Bridge Works logo stood out to me because I think it is bold and simple but effective. I think incorporating a bridge is a simple concept but I believe the designer incorporated it and placed it very well.
ReplyDeleteThe Indiana Urban Forest Logo is a nice crest. I think I like crest-logos now.
ReplyDeleteI like the first two, the urban forest one and the bridge work logo were really cool, i like the concept of the urban forest logo, its creative, and the bridge work logo had a cool feel to it.
ReplyDeleteThe Cross America logo really stood out to me. I usually find religious-related designs to be plain, boring, or just plain tacky. However this one was a simple idea that was presented well and got the point across quickly. I also loved the o2connect logo. It had a very consistent feel and immediately caught my attention and made sense. I do wonder if it would have looked better/simpler without the grey circles around the outside, though.
ReplyDeleteI love how creative each of these logos are. I often have a hard time thinking outside the box but some of these logos show that you dont have to look to far in order to find a good idea. I also noticed the O2Connect logo as being very simple, but well thought out and well executed. It seems to really incorporate all the different concepts that this company is about
ReplyDeleteThe 02Connect logo is a successful representation of itself, because it connects throughout with the orange circles in the middle forming a "2". I also like the simple color scheme which helps to promote division between the "2", green circle, and background.
ReplyDeleteI think what stands out among these logos is that they have a border of some sort that causes them to stand out amongst other things. By containing the logo using a seal or some other sort of outer lines, helps to make the design successful in the variety of places that it could be used.
ReplyDeleteI really like the Indiana Urban Forest logo. The green trees with the light city view in the background give a sense of what Indiana Urban Forest is about. I think that the colors go well together and the logo is put together well.
ReplyDeleteThe bridge works is probably my favorite one. It's simple design makes it strong. The typeface is absolutely perfect for it and the bridge illustration intersect the type to bring it together. The stamp technique is a really nice touch.
ReplyDeleteThe old Northwestern logo is very strong, with the use of negative space and how it is balanced around in the circle.
I really like the shadow logo, I think the fact that it is for some type if aliean organization makes it even better. The logo represents something like theres something else out there and its following you.
