Stephen Borengasser’s Post

We have discussed in class the sad truth that Christians are usually behind when it comes to visual art. Well, I am always encouraged when I find some good art being used by churches and other Christian organizations.  It s not very common but it does occur and I would like to share a few examples of my latest findings. Here are a few church websites that I think are very well done and contain a lot of good graphic design. Have a look and let me know what you think. Are some Christians starting to put more effort into good design?  Are these examples of good design?

  1. I really like the first design because it is a good simple illustration of the life, death and resurrection of Christ, but the colors throw me off. It is a surprisingly muted color pallet for the Christian holiday that is usually so bright and joyful. But it is encouraging to see that there is some thought behind design and it's not just a "got Jesus?" logo. I like the second one too but again I am not sold on the colors although the red is nice. The third one is a nice glimpse of a new church building, I could see it as an image or cover of a church handout for a sneak peek at the new building. It is simple but still conveys all that is needed.

    Nice finds!

  3. I agree that the color choices seem kin of odd, but it looks so much better than many church websites. The sites look well organized and the simple graphics of the first one are a plus. The second site is pretty well done but not very cohesive (lots of different font, colors, styles). The third one looks like it just has a lot of adds to me which personally would be a turn off, but again, still better than many other sites. Interesting finds!

  4. I really enjoy the first design especially. The simplicity is really effective, though I wish it was a little more colorful. The other two aren't "wow" beautiful, but it is nice to see conscious designs when so many church's websites are just bad. But this is encouraging. :)

  5. I really like the last design it has great typography, and looks very well designed. It is nice to see some good design in churches because a lot of them do have pretty terrible design. But these all look very nice.

  6. I like the first the most, but really it isn't so much about it being perfect as it is about making design decisions on purpose. Also it seems like Christian designers love "grunging" things for some reasons. For instance I really like the bottom, I would just rather not have distressed type.

  7. I definitely agree with Jarod; there's a church in my town that has really great design, but literally everything is grunged. I think it's because churches with good design sometimes come off as ingenuine, as though they are trying to buy people (stupid perception) so the grunge kinda makes them look hip, edgy, and human rather than just rich and intelligent.

  8. I agree that these are well designed Church websites... they are refreshing. My favorite out of them is the one wit the colored dots that lead up to white being Easter. It is such a simple way to present a complex topic. Stephen, I agree that it is really encouraging to find church sites that implement great design.
