Stephen Borengasser’s Post

Here are some descriptive logos that I think are really good. What I like about the Apple Bee’s logo is that it is an apple bee. It almost looks like someone took an apple and drew the stripes on with a sharpie. Such a simple idea but I think it is perfect.

The Grape Cloud Winery uses the same kind of literal imagery. The idea is even better though because the grape cloud is producing wine and the Grape Cloud Winery does to. The mark shows exactly what the company is about while at the same time representing the name. I feel like it would be wrong for this company to use a different design.

JC Electric Co. has made use of a very recognizable symbol of electricity. Anyone who sees an outlet knows what it is and the fact that the initials happen to fit is a nice coincidence. This really works well in light of their slogan “Connecting you with the things you love”. I think the outlet is the perfect visual for the idea of connecting the consumers with their electronics and with the company.

  1. Really digging the GrapeCloud logo. Like you said, its very descriptive of the company, but also inviting. I love the interaction of the mark with the type too. It gives off a classy air, while not being pretentious. Clean, simply, smart, effective.

  2. I love the AppleBees logo. It is so cute. I love how it is an apple colored like a bee, very whimsical. The GrapeCloud logo is really creative too. I like how inviting, clean, and simple it looks. The JC Electric logo is really cool too. I like how the JC is make out of the outlet, and that their tagline is "connecting you with the things you love" which makes the outlet perfect for the company since all our electronic devices run on electricity. These logos are very creative and make great logos.

  3. I agree with the general consenses that the Applebee's logo is pretty cool and that the GrapeCloud logo is very creative. I almost wish that the logo for Applebee's this logo posted here because the plain red apple that is on their website has always confused me. But with the one posted here I think it would make more sense (as long as the type used here was used else where too). The GrapeCloud one is neat because it is clean enough to give off a professional air but there is room to have fun with it. For example if the company has a traditional wine making festival then the logo would be great for T-shirts and other merchandise.

The last logo I am not liking quite as much. I really like the concept of having the initials in the socket but when I first saw the receptacle I read JJ, not JC. Though it is a clever idea I am not sold on the 'C' part of the logo. The socket, slogan and font work well together but I would like to see that 'C' for JC tweaked a bit.

    1. I totally agree about the JC logo. I first saw JJ and still wondering why they didn't just tweak it a little to make it more of a C. After all, outlets are not completely symmetrical anyway. I think they got distracted with trying to make it a perfect reflection and lost sight of the priority of readability. I think this logo would also benefit from removing the textured background. Again there is no reason for it to apear like it is on a wall when we all know that is where it goes. especially when this is not exactly how it would be placed on a wall anyway. I think the designer had an amazing concept and idea but made a couple pour choices on execution. I still think it is a nice logo but it certainly has greater potential if it were polished a little.

  4. I really like the idea of literally interpreting a company's brand name into a logo. Sometimes we tend to over think things and try to make them too complicated when there is a simple solution right in front of us. Being literal with these names produced fun and quirky logos while still retaining professional functionality. Really neat! However, I do agree with the complaints about the JC logo. I definitely read it as JJ and it still does not look like a JC no matter how much I squint. I really like the concept though.

  5. I love the JC Electric logo... it is very creative and yet simple enough that it isn't overwhelming what so ever. The logo has a nice feel. The Grape Cloud logo is also really nice! I really like how the word "Grape" is in color but "Cloud" is not. It defiantly helps tie the mark with the type... very effective and gives a classy feel.

  6. Applebee's is awesome!! I like the handrawn affect because it actually looks more like a bumblebee that way; you know, how bees are kind of furry in a way? The typeface is also really elegant and "inviting" playing with the idea of neighborhood.

  7. The JC Electric logo is pretty swell! I think the use of the J and the C are effective and it is a simple yet well put together design. The viewer would instantly know the type of company this logo applies to. It's hard to see this logo being applied to all media types because of the gradients placed on the electric soccer.

  8. I love the JC Electric logo. It took a minute to recognize the J and the C in the outlet but it really is an ingenious solution. Also, it utilizes something you see every day so it is instantly recognizable, while making you see it in a totally new way, so it stays in your mind.

  9. these are great! I love how simple all of them are and yet they really represent the company. You immediately understand what the company is about. I love the cleverness in the last one

  10. I love the first Grape Cloud Winery logo. The descriptive grape "cloud" raining "wine" and then filling the word "Grape" with the same purple color is really nice. The simplicity and font choice really adds to the overall sleekness as well. I just really enjoy the logo.

  11. I'll have to agree with Parker on this one. Both the Apple Bees logo and the Grape Cloud strike me as being tastefully designed and very effective in their message, I just don't see it happening as much with the JC electric logo. I also read the JJ before the JC and was slightly taken back by the blandness of a wall socket. I almost wanted to see something else connecting it to an electrical company. Possibly a clever power lines symbol or and electrical surge of some sort. Either way, it just needs a little refining in my opinion. Maybe they can take after the Grape Cloud design and simplify!
