Jarod Hamm’s Post

Branding 10,000 Lakes is a website where one professional designer has set out to design one logo a day for one of Minnesota's 10,000 lakes. According to her math, it will take her about 27 years to finish. She said her inspiration came from the lack of inspiration that she saw in many of the lakes' logos. I really like her use of simple type and shapes to convey her ideas. I also like how literally she takes some of the logos that sometimes contain a little humor. Another thing she does really well is texture. Almost all of her logos have some texture in the colors and a lot of them have actual photographs in the backdrop that add a lot to the feel. I've used this site for inspiration this year especially on the Canadian Waters project. My only complaint with the designs is they sometimes get repetitive, but I suppose that comes with the territory of designing 10,000 similar projects.

  1. This is an impressive project and one that takes a great passion for good design. A 27 year commitment—what a great way to stay on your creative game.

  2. One other thought—go to the website and click on the index tab. Scroll through all the logos and study the typography, its execution and integration into the mark. These are very nicely designed logos.

  3. That’s crazy! I don't think I would have the commitment. I don't see how the designer can create this quality of a logo every day for almost the same thing. Very creative. I would like to look through all of them when it's done. On the other hand I may not even have time to do that. I really like the one on the top. Real clean and simple and would be easy to make a stamp or brand out of it. Looks like a lake logo.

  4. I really like this post because it not only shows that there literally are thousands of ideas for one subject. It is also neat to see some of the brands for places I am familiar with. I was born in St. Paul Minnesota and my mothers family is from there, near Snail lake actually. I shared this link with my grandfather and he loved it. He said he was really excited about seeing the new brands as they come out. He pointed out, and I agree, that there are many aspects that are shared among the brands like oars and anchors. Even though many of the brands have similarities I think that the majority of them are unique enough to hold interest. My favorite is Sleepy Eye lake. I like how simple it is and yet how random. I don't really know what the arrow is for but I think it adds a nice touch. I didn't see any brand for Snail Lake so I am defiantly going to stay tuned to see what the designer does for that one!

  5. I really love the look of Black Oak lake one. I love how its just two colors, yet popping so well. With the realistic wood texture in the background and the nice, clean logo with-in the design. Its got a really tasty font to. I just over all really enjoy it.

  6. wow, I love that kind of projects, I was wondering how can I make a personal project in graphic design area, and there is my answer. I think, this designer underpants that practice is the best teacher, so she is practicing her logo design skill daily.

  7. This is such a cool idea! I am really inspired by the creativity of each of the logos. After about 10 of them, I would think they would get really repetitive- but they don't. Some of them are similar but each is pretty unique and different. I was wondering though, how effective all of the textures would actually be in execution. On a pamphlet, for example, would the whole piece of paper be the texture, or would you just have the texture as a box surrounding the logo...?

  8. I couldn't imagine designing this many logos. And really, even though they may be similar, I think most logos are similar already (like logos for a shoe store, or something like that, they are going to be similar because there are a lot of them, and people see ideas that work, and want to use them again) but these logos are great. One thing that will be interesting is to see how these logos evolve over the years by their looks. This style is very common for today's logo, so I just wonder what they might look like in ten years; a good project to watch.

  9. This is such a great idea and sounds like such a fun challenge! I really like the Beaver lake logo and how the beaver is halfway submerged in the water. I went to the website and looked at those again. I am amazed at the variety. Some of them have similar characteristics, but all of them look completely different and so amazing.
